Introduction
Donors now have the choice to make a donation not only via SEPA direct debit, but also via Apple/Google Pay, TWINT, SEPA via STRIPE, as well as credit card via a link on their own device. We found that, statistically, the active confirmation of the supporters leads to a better realization rate.
In this article, you will find an introduction to payment via Apple/Google Pay, TWINT, SEPA via STRIPE Credit Card as well as important information that should be considered and used during the payment process with the supporter.

Apple/Google Pay, TWINT and credit cards Self-Checkout Process:
In order to let the supporter pay via Apple or Google Pay, you have to fill in the supporter data as usual.
It is important to fill in the email and mobile phone number in the contact details, otherwise, the self-checkout payment method cannot be selected.
After filling in the supporter data, as well as the selected contribution and interval, you can now select the payment method 'Self Checkout'.
Once you have selected this option, you can proceed to the rest of the form page, with further steps to follow later. When you reach the last page, instead of a signature field, you will see the 'Checkout Options' field at the bottom with the 'Sign on Supporter Device' option already selected by default.
Now the fundraiser only has to press 'Upload' and the donation will be uploaded to our system as an 'unfinished self-checkout donation'. Such a donation will only be displayed in the statistics (and thus on the fundraiser dashboard) when the supporter has filled in and completed the payment process himself/herself.
Once the 'Upload' button has been pressed, the following window will appear.
At the same time as this window appears, an email and a text message will also be sent to the supporter.
E-Mail:
SMS:
The supporter now has three options to successfully complete the payment process:
- Scan the QR code on the tablet to access the following payment form.
- Use the link received by email.
- Use the link received via SMS.
In order to ensure successful support, it is important that the fundraiser takes the potential supporter by hand as much as possible and guides him/her through the payment process. Please note that in order to be PCI compliant (as fundraisers have/will also learn in their PCI training) you should not coerce the supporter in any way, but only politely ask them to complete the process. The facilitator must enter any data independently. Help can only be given verbally, as entering or copying the data by the fundraiser would allow access to sensitive payment data and would therefore not be PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) compliant.
As soon as the supporter has clicked on the link (or scanned the QR code), the following window appears.
As soon as the date of birth field has been filled in correctly and the next button has been clicked, the payment confirmation page loads. Here, on the one hand, the checkbox of the contact options and the respective payment method Apple Pay, Google Pay or credit card must be selected (of course, it is also possible to complete other payment methods, e.g. SEPA direct debit, via this procedure; this is described in another article).
Once the checkbox has been confirmed, various final processes follow, depending on the payment method selected.
Payment with Credit Card
When selecting a credit card as a payment method, the following window pops up. Please note that the screenshot was taken in test mode. This note should not be visible for fundraisers. Here, as usual, the sensitive credit card data must be filled in by the supporter and then the support must be confirmed by clicking on 'Send donation securely'.
When the payment is successfully completed, a success message is sent to the supporter's device (similar to a successful upload of the form). An example of this message from our test campaign can be found here.
You can also politely ask the donor to show this success message after the payment has been successfully completed. This way, fundraisers can be sure that the support has actually arrived and that the payment process has been successfully completed without violating PCI DSS regulations.
Payment with Apple Pay
When you select Apple Pay as the payment method, the following window pops up. Please note that the screenshot was taken in test mode. This note should not be visible for fundraisers. Here, as usual, the sensitive payment data must be filled in by the supporter and then the support must be confirmed with 'Send donation securely'.
As soon as the supporter has clicked 'Submit donation securely', the classic Apple Pay interface appears, which must then be confirmed by the supporter as shown in the screenshot below.
When the payment has been successfully completed, a success message will be sent to the supporter's device (similar to a successful upload of the form).
You can also politely ask the donor to show you this success message after the payment has been successfully completed. This way you can be sure that the support has actually arrived and that the payment process has been successfully completed without violating PCI DSS regulations.
Payment with Google Pay
When you select Google Pay as the payment method, the following window pops up. Please note that the screenshot was taken in test mode. This note should not be visible for fundraisers. Here, as usual, the sensitive credit card details of the supporter have to be filled in and then the support has to be confirmed with 'Send donation securely'.
Please note that some banks in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland do not yet support Google Pay. In this case, the field that says G-Pay in the screenshot below is simply empty and you cannot continue with the payment. Should this occur, you must still make sure to help the supporter verbally or find out if he/she is using a non-supporting bank without asking/getting access to his/her device. More information on this topic can be found below in the section Google Wallet / Google Pay supporting banks.
Paying with Google Pay is currently only supported when using Google Chrome.
As soon as the supporter has pressed 'Submit donation securely', the classic Google Pay interface appears, which must then be confirmed by the supporter, as shown in the photo below.
When the payment has been successfully completed, a success message will follow on the supporter's device (similar to a successful upload of the form).
You can also politely ask the donor to show this success message after the payment has been successfully completed. This way you can be sure that the support has actually arrived and that the payment process has been successfully completed without violating PCI DSS regulations.
Payment with TWINT
Please note that TWINT can only be chosen as payment method, when Swiss Franc is chosen as payment currency.
When you select TWINT as the payment method, the following window pops up. Please note that the screenshot was taken in test mode. This note should not be visible for fundraisers. Here, as usual, the sensitive credit card details of the supporter have to be filled in and then the support has to be confirmed with "Donate [Donation Amount] CHF [Donation interval]".
As soon as the "Donate [Donation Amount] CHF [Donation interval]" button has been clicked, the donor will be directed to the following screen on their device. Donors can either scan a QR Code using their TWINT APP (e.g. with a different device) or enter the copy-pastable code, seen on the screen.
In the TWINT app the donor can click on "Pay" and see the following screen, where either QR Scanning or code enterin can be chosen.
After Successfully absolving either option, the donor will be redirected to the "Automated Payments" Screen, as can be seen below. On this screen, the consent of the donor in regard to regular payments that are about to be activated needs to be given. "Test New Pizza" is the account name of the testing account, issued by TWINT. When working with an organization, this will show the organization's name.
After confirming, by clicking on "Activate", a green confirmation screen will appear.
When exiting the app, the remaining Formunauts Self-Checkout Screen should show a "Success Window" too. It always helps to ask donors to show this Formunauts Success screen, to verify that the donation completed.
Payment with SEPA via STRIPE
Using SEPA via Stripe has some advantages and also disadvantages and currently doesn't work in Switzerland.
Advantages:
- It is a safe way to process donations for Charities that can't facilitate SEPA Payments yet through other systems
- The payment is made just a few days after sign-up (Note: Prenotification must state that this is agreed by the donor)
- Payment results are automatically returned to FN System for reporting etc.
Disadvantages:
- Fundraisers have to be online to use this payment method (online payment)
- IBAN Checks aren't working in the Formunauts System
- The Donor has to give an e-mail address for the payment method to be shown
Prenotifications:
Prenotifications must be sent before the first debit - this can happen by email, SMS or post. All people with a correct email address will receive an email from RaiseNow with the relevant information. People without a correct email address must be informed by the charity by post.
Here are a few links on the subject of prenotifications:

https://www.micropayment.de/glossar/prenotification/
https://gocardless.com/de/handbuch/artikel/sepa-pre-notification/
There are a few specialities:
- As soon as an invoice/payment/payment is initialized in RaiseNow, it takes up to 2 weeks until it is carried out and then also appears in RN. During these two weeks we have no information about the current status of the payment.
- If a subscription/donation is canceled, this has no impact on the invoices/payments/payments that are already open.
This means that if a donation is canceled, it may be that money will still be debited because the (open) payment has already been initiated.
- A refund is only possible once the invoice/payment/payment has been completed and is shown in RN as successful (i.e. up to 2 weeks) after creation.
What to look out for
PCI DSS
As already mentioned in the above sections, it is very important that these payment methods are handled with care and acted upon according to the knowledge imparted in our PCI DSS Compliance Training. The following points should be considered and adhered to in any case:
- The supporter should always fill in payment details independently and without direct intervention or visible sharing of sensitive data with the fundraiser in the payment form.
- The fundraiser must not enter data for the supporter on their device.
Supporters Assistance
In addition to being PCI-compliant, it is also important that fundraisers guide their supporters through the payment process as best they can to avoid leaving unfinished donations. We know that these two factors together can sometimes be challenging, but they are extremely important to ensure the success of these payment methods.
In order to best 'take supporters by the hand', fundraisers can memorize this article or the accompanying training as much as possible in order to be fully aware of each step. In this way, supporters can be verbally guided through the process of paying on their own devices. Here, every little detail can be discussed and explained as soon as the other person seems uncertain or awkward.
At the end of the process, as mentioned before, the success message can be shown to confirm that everything has worked and that the donation/form has been completed correctly. This is also PCI-compliant, as no sensitive data is released.
Google Wallet / Google Pay supporting banks
Besides Apple Pay and credit card payments, Google Pay is unfortunately not yet as reliable, as there are still some banks and therefore card providers that do not yet support Google Pay for various reasons. If a supporter decides to pay with Google Pay, the fundraiser has to make sure that his or her bank supports the wallet. In our experience, several people think they own Google Pay because they can pay with Google Pay in the Google Playstore. However, this is different from the 'Tap to Pay' feature of Google Pay, which is required to complete the payment successfully.
Please find a list of supporting banks in a country of your choice at this link.
