5 tips for tablet use in cold weather

We know: fundraisers never give up and stay motivated even in the cold. However, the performance of some tablets can suffer from the cold.

Therefore, we have five useful tips, so you won't have any problems with your tablet even with temperatures below zero degrees:

1. Carry the tablet on your body

With lower temperatures, the capacity of lithium-ion batteries built into most tablets also gets lower. If the temperature of the device drops below 0°C, there will be noticeable losses - it will be critical if the tablet gets colder than -10°C. So try not to just leave the tablet at the information booth as it will cool down relatively quickly. Put the tablet in one of the inner pockets of your jacket, so it is protected by your body heat before cooling.

2. Avoid strong temperature fluctuations

If the tablet is exposed to strong temperature fluctuations, it can happen that condensation forms inside the tablet, which can damage the hardware of the tablet. Tablets should therefore never be put on the heater to warm up. Also, wait a moment for the tablet to warm up before using it again, and always charge the tablet when it is warm.

3. Use special gloves

Not only battery life can drop with frosty temperatures, but the touchscreen can also be sensitive to cold weather. Since the touchscreen does not react to pressure but to changes in the electrical field on the surface, the touch screen can not be operated with normal gloves or with cold fingers. But there are special touchscreen gloves that not only warm the fingers but also allow you to use the tablet.

4. Power Banks as an emergency battery

To be on the safe side, we recommend that you have a power bank with you, should the capacity of the battery not be enough. But even here, the capacity of the battery can sink with the cold, so keep power banks also as close to the body, so they do not cool down. And also wait for the tablet to warm up before you charge it with your power bank.

5. Tablet cases

Tablet cases also protect against cooling the tablet. However, attention should be paid to the material here. Covers made of leather, fabric or neoprene better protect against cold than plastic or metal shells, as these materials cool down very quickly. But even with a case, the tablet should not just lie on the information booth, but still be worn as close to the body as possible to keep the temperature of the device as warm as possible.

Lastly we can only add two tips, that helped us to survive our coldest winters while fundraising on the street: Grandma's hand-knitted woolen socks and a lot of hot tea - then nothing will stand in the way of successful tablet fundraising even in the freezing cold!
